Saskatoon’s Muslim community is offering support to several families after one teen died and two were injured in a single-vehicle crash.
The Islamic Association of Saskatchewan-Saskatoon confirmed the death of 16-year-old Sheryaar Aamir, a student at Evan Hardy Collegiate. Mateen Raazi, a member of the association’s media and outreach committee, said all three teens are members of the local Muslim community.

“It’s just a heart-wrenching tragedy that has unfolded. Our thoughts and our prayers go out to the family of the deceased and those of the injured,” Raazi said in an interview.
City police were called Sunday around 6 a.m. to the scene of the crash in the 4200 block of Taylor Street East. Police said a 2008 Honda Civic “had been travelling east on Taylor Street at a high rate of speed when the driver lost control.” The vehicle struck a pole and flipped over.
The 16-year-old was declared dead at the scene. Two others — both 15-year-old boys — were taken to hospital. Police said one suffered minor injuries while the other was believed to be in serious condition.
“At this time, impairment is not believed to have been a factor,” police said in a news release.
Raazi said the Islamic Association is in contact with the families, who are not speaking publicly at the moment.
“At this stage, comfort and support are paramount,” Raazi said.
A GoFundMe campaign was created and quickly surpassed its initial goal of $20,000. Now, the goal is $25,000.
Mahnoor Naeem, organizer of the fundraiser, urged supporters to make dua for Aamir’s maghfirat — essentially to say a prayer asking Allah for mercy and forgiveness, to keep Aamir safe and sound, and welcome him.
