A man was shot and injured by police after reports of shots being fired and an overnight standoff with an armed suspect on Tsay Keh Dene First Nation lands.

When RCMP officers arrived at the home north of Prince George late Tuesday night, two people were dead inside. A man inside armed with a gun ran into a nearby home as police approached.

Officers surrounded the second home and, shortly after midnight, called for assistance from a negotiator and an emergency response team.

After hours of negotiations, further backup arrived at about 5:40 a.m. Wednesday.

“Negotiations deteriorated,” RCMP Staff Sgt. Kris Clark said in a statement. So the emergency response team fired “a chemical irritant into the residence.”

He said the man then left the house, carrying a firearm.

Police fired at him with firearms and a weapon that uses “less-lethal” rounds, hitting him.

Clark said the man was given first aid then taken to hospital with serious but not life-threatening injuries.

The Independent Investigations Office of B.C. was called in to determine whether police actions or inactions led to the injuries.

Two people were confirmed dead in the original home, and a separate investigation into those deaths is being conducted by the RCMP north district major crime unit.

Police don’t release updates while an independent investigation is under way. Public reports become available at iiobc.ca after an investigation is complete, and the B.C. Prosecution Service follows up if charges are recommended.
