It’s all fun and games until a four-year-old is worried about taking your job.

One of the players’ favourite newer traditions at the Masters is how the annual Par-3 Contest has transformed into a very family-friendly affair. Every year on the Wednesday before the tournament begins, players take their game to the short course at Augusta National where they trade regular caddies for adorable cuties and make Masters memories alongside their wives and kids.

There will be plenty of tiny caddies in miniature white jumpsuits on Wednesday, but one conscientious toddler might be a game-time decision as Adam and Jessica Hadwin try to convince four-year-old Maddox that nobody will be losing their job on account of her.

“She’s expressed some nervousness to do it,” Hadwin said on Monday. “She thinks that it’s for real and she doesn’t want to take Joe’s job, but we’re convincing her that it’s just for fun.”

The Joe in question is Hadwin’s longtime caddie Joe Cruz, who should feel pretty good knowing he’s got little Maddox looking out for him. Hadwin plans to play with fellow Canadians Corey Conners and Nick Taylor who both also have young families.

Taylor’s only other Masters appearance came in 2020 when COVID moved the tournament to November with no patrons and no Par-3 Contest.

“This is essentially my first true experience,” Taylor said Monday. “The Par-3 contest, I’m really looking forward to it.”

Conners confirmed that two-and-half-year-old Reis is expected to caddie for him on Wednesday, although her outfit is yet to be determined.

“Reis is going to be on the bag. Really excited for that,” he said. “Hopefully she allows us to suit her up and then she’ll definitely be out there, and playing with Nick and Adam, too, so it’ll be fun.”
