You cannot win if you do not play.

That’s the motto that motivated Edmonton’s Matthew McDougall to buy two 20X Supreme lottery tickets, one of which turned out to be a winning ticket worth $2 million.

The 20X Supreme weren’t part of his regular routine, according to McDougall. He decided to forgo his usual scratch ticket at the Shell Lotto Spot location at 7535-75 St., instead picking up what would become his winning ticket.

“I had been buying a different ticket, but I hadn’t won anything in a while,” he said in a Wednesday news release. “So, I thought I would try this one.”

McDougall handed the ticket to partner Thaiwan Warulang, with whom he will share the winnings, to scan on the Lotto Spot app to see what they had won.

“At first, I thought we won $2,000,” Warulang said in the release. “But there were too many zeroes for that. Then I thought maybe $200,000.”

“Matt looked at the screen and was like: ‘I think you missed a zero – that’s $2,000,000.’ Well, oh my God. We won two-million-dollars.”

The couple said they haven’t made any plans for their windfall yet, other than clearing debts and making some wise investments. But they don’t anticipate they’ll have a problem coming up with other ideas.

“We booked a month-long trip to Thailand just before Christmas,” Warulang said. “Maybe we’ll upgrade our plane tickets.”
