“After 34 years at CCSD, and the last four years as your chief, I am resigning for personal reasons.”

Szumlas took over the post in March 2020 from Gary Strother, who had held the position for eight years.

Szumlas has carried several roles in the CCSD since the 1990s, including as teacher, science supervisor, assistant principal, vice-principal, principal and other positions.

In a letter, CCSD board chair Cook highlighted several of Szumlas’s accomplishments in his role as chief superintendent, which included leading the board through the COVID-19 pandemic early in his tenure and creating a racial justice team.

“The board of trustees sincerely thanks Dr. Szumlas for helping the CCSD move closer to its vision of every student knowing Christ and realizing their full potential,” Cook wrote.

CCSD did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

The board hasn’t outlined plans for hiring Szumlas’ successor and said it will provide an update, including the appointment of an interim chief superintendent.
