Members of the Upper Ottawa Valley detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police have charged the driver of a motor vehicle in connection with a serious collision with a cyclist south of Pembroke last fall.

An OPP media release this week said an eastbound passenger vehicle had collided with an eastbound cyclist on Highway 17 between Highway 41 and Sawmill Road at about 12 noon on Sept. 25.

The 63-year-old cyclist from Germany was transported to hospital by Renfrew County paramedics and later transferred to an Ottawa-area hospital with life-threatening, life-altering injuries. The driver and lone occupant of the passenger vehicle was not injured.

On Tuesday, the 34-year-old driver from Cobden was charged with careless driving causing bodily harm under the Highway Traffic Act. They are scheduled to appear in Provincial Offences Court in Pembroke on April 22.

A section of Highway 17 was closed between Highway 41 and Sawmill Road for approximately eight hours following the collision.
