City police arrested three men and are looking for a fourth after close to $10,000 in copper wire was stolen from a north-central Edmonton rail yard.

Between September and November, 2023, officers responded to a series of break-ins at the Canadian National Railway storage yard at 127 Avenue at 121 Street, Edmonton police said in a new release this week.

In most of those cases, the thieves cut through fencing to get access to the yard before making off with loads of copper wire.

Police identified multiple suspects prior to the arrests of three men; an arrest warrant has also been issued for a fourth man.

“Copper wire theft remains a big problem in the City of Edmonton,” said Acting Det. Tyrone O’Dea, of the west branch investigative response team (IRT), in the news release.

“In some instances, the destructive nature of these thefts disturbs ongoing infrastructure projects within the city.”

Michael James Roberts, 50, is charged with six counts of break and enter.

Upon arrest, Roberts also had six outstanding warrants that included break and enter with intent to commit, possess break-in instruments, failure to comply with probation order, two counts of fail to comply with undertaking, and fail to attend court.

Mark Gerald Johnston, 37, is charged with six counts of break and enter and breach conditional sentence order.

Shane Michael Manning, 38, is charged with breach of release order, utter forged document and obstruct police officer.

Charles Taggart Patterson, 33, is wanted on an arrest warrant for break and enter.
