The province’s teacher regulator has released a cryptic announcement that an unnamed B.C. teacher has been suspended for two days for allowing “extremely inappropriate conduct” among students.

The agreement posted online Tuesday says a B.C. school district issued a letter of discipline and suspended the teacher for three days without pay after learning of the unprofessional behaviour. The district also ordered the teacher to take a course through the Justice Institute of B.C on reinforcing respectful professional boundaries.

The notice says the teacher “permitted their class to engage in extremely inappropriate conduct involving other students in the school,” but doesn’t go into specifics.

It says the teacher was investigated by the B.C. Commissioner for teacher regulation and admits the conduct amounted to professional misconduct under the Teachers Act.

The teacher agrees to a further two-day suspension and must take another course on reinforcing professional boundaries by the end of this month before being reinstated.

The commissioner says the penalties were considered appropriate because “the teacher failed to model appropriate behaviour expected of an educator,” and the conduct “showed a lack of understanding of appropriate professional boundaries.”

The consent resolution agreement does not provide the teacher’s name, gender or school district, and doesn’t specify when the incident or incidents occurred. It also redacts the date when the agreement was signed.

The commissioner explains it is not releasing more information about who was involved or what happened to “protect the identity of students who were harmed, abused or exploited by the teacher.
