Legendary coach John Calipari’s name misspelled on cover of newspaper

Kalipari? Call him what you want apparently, but John Calipari is a hall-of-fame coach and the Lexington Herald-Leader had some explaining to do after a front-page error misspelled the famed college coach’s name following Kentucky’s opening round loss in the NCAA tournament.

With questions surrounding Calipari’s future, the newspaper printed a front-page story debating whether a $33-million buyout of the coach would be the right move for the University of Kentucky.

The only problem was the headline was, “$33 million Kalipari buyout would be wrong thing to do.”

The typo made waves on social media, even leading to sports broadcaster Rachel Nichol asking her 1.1 million followers whether it was a typo or an “intentional insult.”

As bad a mistake as it is, let’s not lose our heads here and remind ourselves of Hanlon’s Razor: Never attribute to malice that which is adequately explained by stupidity.

A tweet from former Herald-Leader reporter Joshua Moore points out that the newspaper hasn’t had local copy editors in more than five years, so it’s a near certainty that it was an honest, albeit horribly timed error by an unassuming out-of-town headline writer.
