The United States abstained, but did not veto a United Nations Security Council resolution demanding a ceasefire in Gaza during the Muslim holy month of Ramadan.

It is the first time the council has succeeded in passing a resolution demanding a halt to the fighting between Israel and Hamas.

The resolution also demands the release of all hostages taken captive during the October 7th surprise attack by Hamas militants in southern Israel.

But it does not link the two measures.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has canceled his upcoming diplomatic delegation’s visit to Washington to protest the UN vote.
