Police in Spruce Grove, west of Edmonton, are investigating a highway collision that sent four people to hospital with serious injuries – in some cases life-threatening.

Parkland RCMP say preliminary findings suggest a Stony Plain Community Peace officer attempted a traffic stop on a red sedan that was speeding.

The vehicle turned west onto Highway 16a, running two lights before colliding with a minivan, according to police.

Both the driver and passenger of the minivan were taken to the hospital with serious, life-threatening injuries.

Officers say the driver and passenger of the sedan were taken to hospital with serious but non-life-threatening injuries.

“Parkland RCMP would like to inform the public that they will be investigating every element surrounding the collision and, should it be warranted, will lay the appropriate charges,” police said in a news release.
