Kingsville and area students will attend Erie Migration Academy next year. 

Trustees at the Greater Essex County District School Board rejected attempts to overturn the new name, which was chosen at a Feb. 20 board meeting despite it not being one of the two names suggested by a public consultation process that included a naming committee.

The new school on Jasperson Drive in Kingsville, which will take in 1,100 students from kindergarten to Grade 12 from Kingsville and neighbouring towns, opens in September. 

The name has been the subject of considerable ire in Kingsville, because it was introduced at a board meeting by Kingsville Trustee Julia Burgess and voted on without prior knowledge from residents. 

Many residents wanted “Kingsville” retained in the school name and Erie Migration Academy has an unfortunate vulgar acronym that is well-known among young people.
