A fire was started in a shop at a rural Sherwood Park home last week as Strathcona County RCMP sought to arrest a man wanted on multiple warrants.

Strathcona County RCMP Crime Reduction (CRU) went to the home near Range Road 223 and Township Road 512 in Sherwood Park on March 13 to execute an arrest on a man wanted on numerous outstanding warrants, police said in a Monday release.

Due to comments made by the man, the situation was deemed high risk, and the RCMP Emergency Response Team (ERT) was called to the scene along with RCMP general duty members and members of the RCMP General Investigation Section (GIS).

Shortly after a fire was started in a shop on the property, a man surrendered to police. He was transported to hospital with minor injuries and cleared before to being lodged into cells.

No further injuries were reported.

James Veinot, 53, of Sherwood Park, has been arrested on 12 outstanding warrants. He is now charged with two counts of arson.

He was remanded into custody following a Judicial Interim Release hearing and was scheduled to appear in Sherwood Park Provincial Court on Monday, March 18.
