The British Columbia Utilities Commission has approved energy-based rates for B.C. Hydro’s public electric vehicle charging service.
The new pricing structure approved Wednesday means drivers will pay for the amount of energy supplied to the car rather than the amount of time it is plugged in at the station.

It also levels the playing field for drivers with EVS that charge slower than the typically more expensive faster-charging cars.

The commission also approved an extended-stay charge of 40 cents per minute for B.C. Hydro’s fast charging stations to deter drivers from parking longer than they need to at charging stations.
Drivers will pay 34.34 cents per kilowatt-hour for all fast-chargers and 28.28 cents per kWh for slower Level 2 chargers.
In July, B.C. Hydro applied to the commission seeking approval for time-based EV charging rates as well as new energy-based rates, in part because its existing rates did not recover the full cost of providing EV charging service.
This led to some EV drivers raising concerns that an increase in time-based rates was unfair given that some vehicles charge faster.
