James Cameron fans have been eagerly anticipating this week, when collector’s editions of The Abyss, True Lies, and Aliens hit 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray for the first time, joining recently released special collector’s editions of Cameron’s mega-blockbusters Titanic, Avatar, and Avatar: The Way of Water. io9 has an exclusive clip from the special features arriving with The Abyss to share today.
The clip comes from brand-new documentary “The Legacy of The Abyss,” described in press materials as offering “stories from James Cameron and the crew about how and why the film continues to have an impact on filmmaking today.” This particular story is about the underwater thriller’s translucent, probing, distinctively fluid alien tentacle, something you know you’ve long wanted to learn more about! Here’s visual effects Dennis Muren (a Star Wars and Indiana Jones veteran whose other credits include E.T. the Extraterrestrial, Close Encounters of the Third Kind, Terminator 2: Judgment Day, Jurassic Park, Twister, and so many more) to lead off the discussion:
The other new feature included with The Abyss is “Deep Dive: A Conversation with James Cameron,” described as “an exclusive new sit-down with James Cameron as he revisits the origin of the project and addresses some of the myths behind the production.” Not new to this release, but still fascinating, is “Under Pressure: Making The Abyss,” which is “the original documentary about the infamous production of The Abyss, with candid commentary by the actors and crew.” There’s also additional archival footage showing behind-the-scenes glimpses of how some of the movie’s most dramatic sets and set pieces were created.
And, of course, The Abyss will look and sound snazzier than ever before; the“4K transfer for each release will be presented in superb Dolby Vision HDR and with an immersive Atmos audiomix.” The collector’s editions of The Abyss, as well as True Lies and Aliens, will be released on 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray for the first time on March 12.
