The Vancouver Canucks are holding their breath about the status of goaltender Thatcher Demko.

The star netminder left the game suddenly midway through the second period and went straight to the dressing room. He was replaced by backup Casey DeSmith.

What happened isn’t clear. Demko made several calm saves in the minutes leading up to his departure. He appeared to show some discomfort, but the cause isn’t clear.

The Canucks coaches who returned to the press box following the intermission put on an upbeat appearance, masking any concern they might be holding about Demko’s status.

Asked for an update on Demko’s status a team spokesperson said the goalie would not return to the game.
