The Edmonton Oilers continued to add to their stable ahead of Friday’s NHL trade deadline, claiming defenceman Troy Stecher and a seventh-round draft pick in 2024 from the Arizona Coyotes for a fourth-round pick in 2027.
The deal came on the heels of the Oilers acquiring a pair of centremen from the Anaheim Ducks, Adam Henrique and Sam Carrick, in a three-team deal involving Edmonton’s 2024 first-round draft pick one day earlier.

“We’re going to continue to work the phones through Friday and see if we can do anything else,” Oilers general manager Ken Holland said following the announcement of Wednesday’s deal. “I am going to talk to teams about a veteran defenceman. Depends what’s available and what the cost is.
“I’ve spent some draft capital over the last three or four years, so cost will factor in. We like the six that we’ve got. I think if we do something we’ll bring in somebody who is a number seven.”
That seventh D-man came in the form of Stecher, a 29-year-old native of Richmond, B.C., who has a goal and four assists in 47 games this year.
He had 19 goals, 89 assists and 217 penalty minutes in 487 career games between the Calgary Flames, Detroit Red Wings, Los Angeles Kings and Vancouver Canucks.
As for the cost factor, unlike the deal with the Ducks — which saw Anaheim and the Tampa Bay Lightning consume a significant portion of Henrique’s and Carrick’s contracts — the Oilers will take on the entirety of Stecher’s remaining $1.1 million cap hit.
