The intersection of Hastings and Nanaimo streets in East Vancouver was the scene of a fatal hit and run during the afternoon rush hour Wednesday.

According to a statement from VPD, the victim is a woman in her 80s who was killed in the crosswalk at about 2:20 p.m.

The driver fled the scene.

Police said they have found the “suspected hit and run vehicle.” They have a suspect in custody.

The investigation is continuing. Witnesses or drivers with dashcam video of the collision are asked to contact VPD’s Collision Investigation Unit at 604-717-3012.

A tent was erected over what appeared to be a deceased person on East Hastings Street on the west side of Nanaimo within the pedestrian crossing.
