Breaking news on Wednesday morning that Edmonton Oilers are in the process of acquiring veteran forwards Adam Henrique and Sam Carrick from Anaheim Ducks.

Going the other way will be Edmonton’s first round pick as well as a conditional fifth rounder, with Anaheim’s seventh coming this way. No specific details as yet of a third party broker retaining part of Henrique’s $5.825 million cap hit. Carrick’s cap hit is a much more affordable $850,000. Both pacts expire at the end of the current season.

Henrique, 34, is an all-purpose player who can play centre or left wing. He’s also been a regular on both special teams, averaging about 2½ minutes on each unit. Overall he has averaged a shade over 18 minutes a night, scoring 18-24-42 with a rather astonishing +3 for the lacklustre Ducks.

On his career the left-shooting Henrique has played 890 games, scoring 257-264-521.

Carrick, 32, is a right-shot centre who has gradually worked his way into becoming a full-time NHLer. The current season is his first in his 12-year professional career in which he hasn’t spent any time in the AHL, where he has accumulated 471 GP over the years. As an NHLer he has played 224 games with 26-22-48, essentially fourth line scoring rates, along with 304 minutes in penalties. In the current season he is 8-3-11, -11, with 90 PiM.

In addition to shoring up their middle 6 and bottom 6 respectively, It’s clear the Oilers are looking to bolster their penalty kill unit and faceoff capability with the dual acquisition. Carrick (2:40) and Henrique (2:34) were 1-2 on the Ducks in average ice time on the penalty kill. Between them they took almost all of the faceoffs on that unit, with Carrick at 195 draws, Henrique 175, and all other Ducks combined at just 72. Overall, Henrique has a 53% win rate in 911 draws, most on the Ducks, while the right-handed Carrick is at 51% in 628 draws, including a solid 50.3% on the penalty kill where league average tends to be in the 45-46% range.

In other news, Sam Gagner cleared waivers.

More to come.
