Wallpaper can add interest and colour to any room, but the repeating pattern in most commercial papers can quickly grow tiresome. A custom painted mural can be a more creative and long-lasting solution.
Interior stylist and professional home stager Ashely Rosenow of Illustrious Interiors remembers when she first suggested to a client that a bespoke mural would be a superior alternative to wallpaper.

“I thought, we could just paint something custom that would work better with their room and that’s how my muraling started. It exploded from there and it’s probably 90 per cent of what I do now,” says Rosenow.
In addition to residential murals, Rosenow has created public paintings at the Kingsway Mall and St. Albert Centre with several colourful installations on display in Fort Saskatchewan.
She and three other Edmonton area muralists will demonstrate how they scale a piece of art from a small painting to a large wall at the Edmonton Home and Garden Show, March 21 to 24 at the Edmonton Expo Centre. The artists are participating in a new feature called Paint with Purpose in which their work, created during the four-day show, will be donated to local charities.
Rosenow will be working with assistants Amber and Tami Gubersky and with three Edmonton artists — Brook Mears @lushmossdesigns; Janine Blair @miss._eclectic and Leanne Schultz @lsscenicstudio, who will be painting her first mural at the Edmonton Home and Garden Show.
The foursome will paint murals and play structures using paint donated by Cloverdale. Sofa Land is donating furniture so show goers can sit and watch the artists at work.
The Paint with Purpose charities include Women in Need Society, Stollery Children’s Hospital, Zebra Child and Youth Advocacy Centre, Second Chance Animal Rescue Society and the Edmonton Humane Society. Each organization can choose to either display their donated art piece or use them to fundraise.
Rosenow will be at the Edmonton Home and Garden Show daily with her students and will be on hand to chat with show attendees.
