Berlin (dpa) – According to Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock, Germany will continue to support Azerbaijan and Armenia in their efforts to achieve peace. “We believe that after years of painful conflict, Armenia and Azerbaijan now have the opportunity to achieve lasting peace,” said the Minister in Berlin, where she met the foreign ministers of the two countries. The talks took place at Villa Borsig, the guest house of the Federal Foreign Office.
Baerbock also noted that Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan and Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev had previously stated they were willing to settle their remaining differences exclusively by peaceful means. The peace negotiations in Berlin were preceded by talks between Federal Chancellor Olaf Scholz, Pashinyan and Aliyev on the fringes of the Munich Security Conference in mid-February. Baerbock visited the two countries in November 2023. Azerbaijan and Armenia were once part of the Soviet Union. Fighting between the two states flares up again and again.
