Nairobi (dpa) – The UN Environment Assembly UNEA-6 has has agreed on resolutions relating to the management of water resources, chemical waste and the environmental impact of mining. Representatives of the 193 member states adopted 15 resolutions at the end of the week-long UNEA-6 in Nairobi. The UNEA is the world’s highest decision-making body for environmental issues. With more than 140 ministers and almost 6,000 delegates, the sixth UN Environment Assembly was the largest meeting of its kind to date.
German Environment Minister Steffi Lemke called the conference a “beacon of multilateralism” in a difficult global situation. In Germany’s view, said Lemke, UNEA-6 had brought “major advances” in the protection of global water resources. The Minister particularly emphasised one resolution on the handling of hazardous chemicals: the Global Framework on Chemicals was adopted in 2023 under the German Presidency and has now been strengthened once again.
