The University of Calgary Dinos men’s hockey team made a statement in Game 1 of the Canada West final on Friday night.

The second-seeded Dinos scored five times in a span of 6:20 en route to a 5-2 win over the No. 1 UBC Thunderbirds in Vancouver.

Marty Westhaver’s goal at 4:27 of the second period got the offensive outburst started, with Adam Kydd, Aidan Sutter, Colson Gengenbach and Max Patterson also tallying for the Dinos. Carl Tetachuk made 34 saves to help put Calgary one win away from a second straight and 10th overall Hardy Trophy.

Josh Williams gave UBC the lead in the first period, and Sam Huo got one back in the second after the Dinos’ onslaught. Cole Schwebius made 16 saves.

The Dinos look to win the title in Game 2 on Saturday (8 p.m. MT). A deciding contest, if necessary, is set for Sunday.

St. Mary’s rallies to reach ACAC men’s basketball final

Caleb Jipp scored 29 points and the St. Mary’s University Lightning men’s basketball team rallied to defeat the Lakeland College Rustlers 87-82 in an Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference  Final Four semifinal in Fort McMurray on Friday night.

Brock Dewsbery scored 22 points while Pelumi Ajayi added 17 for the Lightning, who outscored the Rustlers 24-15 in the fourth quarter. Bahaeddin Salma led Lakeland College with 25 points.

Calgary’s St. Mary’s faces the host Keyano College Huskies in the final on Saturday (6 p.m.).

The Huskies defeated the SAIT Trojans 93-83 in the other semi. Marcus Masters and Akoi Yuot led SAIT with 27 and 26 points, respectively. Evan Meyer had 20 points for Keyano College.

The Trojans will play the Rustlers for bronze on Saturday (3 p.m.).

Women fall to Eagles, to play for bronze

The host St. Mary’s women’s basketball team also staged a late rally, but fell 66-59 to The King’s University Eagles in a semifinal at Glenmore Christian Academy on Friday.

Ivet Hidalgo scored 19 points and Adit Deng added 13 for the Lightning, who outscored the Eagles 24-15 in the final quarter. Jordana Rivet had 18 points for the Eagles.

St. Mary’s faces Briercrest College for bronze on Saturday (5:30 p.m.). In the gold-medal final to follow, TKU will play Lakeland College, which defeated Briercrest 54-49 in the other semi.
