Berlin (d.d) – In her documentary film “Dahomey”, the French filmmaker Mati Diop follows stolen artworks on their way back from France to their country of origin in Benin. The jury of this year’s Berlinale, chaired by Lupita Nyong’o, awarded the director first prize at the film festival: the Golden Bear.
The Silver Bear Grand Jury Prize went to the intimate South Korean film “Yeohaengjaui pilyo” (A Traveler’s Needs) by director Hong Sangsoo.
The Romanian-American actor Sebastian Stan won a Silver Bear for his outstanding performance in the thriller “A Different Man”.
“Pepe”, a film by the Dominican director Nelson Carlos de los Santos Arias featuring a hippo as its protagonist won a Silver Bear for Best Director.
The director and author Matthias Glasner won a Silver Bear for Germany with his script for the drama “Sterben” (Dying).
Twenty productions were in the running for the coveted main prizes. The Berlinale ends on Sunday with an audience day which includes showings of several festival films. A total of 233 entries from 80 countries were shown in the course of the week-long event.
