Crackdown: The Government is taking action to stamp out confusing messaging on scams
The Government is finally taking action to stamp out confusing messaging on scams, Money Mail reveals.
Until now, the police, banks, insurance providers and fraud charities have had their own strategies and messaging to warn households.
Officials have admitted this has caused ‘confusion’ about what to do when people fall victim to scams.
Last May, the official Fraud Strategy warned: ‘People do not always protect themselves and reporting rates remain low.’
From February 12, government departments and businesses will have to unite behind ‘clear, technically accurate and timely messaging’ on how people can protect themselves from scams and report an incident when it happens.
The Government says it will enable millions more to act, stopping fraudsters in their tracks.
Money Mail’s Stop the Social Media Scammers campaign has called on Rishi Sunak to take action against online fraud.
Simon Fell, MP and the Prime Minister’s new anti-fraud champion, says: ‘Consistency is key to fight fraud and teach people how to protect themselves from scammers.’
